For those of us at The Konspiracy Group, ‘Global atmospheres for new millennia’ is a good definition of what the Pan Ambient event series represents. Ambient, chill out, downtempo, call it what you will.

A rising creative consciousness is inspiring musicians and artists from all over the world to create and collaborate and we are proud to find ourselves in the heart of it all. We love this music, because it gives a home to the unclassifiable and the sounds and textures of this universal fabric.

With this first release in our series, we reach across the Pacific to pay homage to the some of the artists that have inspired us. This compilation connects the dots between some of Vancouver and Tokyo’s brightest ambienteers, all of whom performed together at the Panambient Bento at Bullets in Tokyo’s Roppongi district in April 2007.

Did we mention we also like to eat and be merry?

A Bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables as a side dish. This is one bento that feeds your sonic appetite with a little bit of everything, no matter wherer your tastes lie. Tokyo serves up a smorgasbord, from the analogue goodness of Hataken and the idiosyncratic steel pan drums of Yoshio Machida to the blunted pop sensibilities of Mu Tanz, and AEN’s metallic sonorities.

Still hungry?

Vancouver’s serving it up hot, as Gunshae delivers two slabs of ambience, including a remix of a tune from their debut LP that features Mu Tanz vocalist Aya Oshida. If beats are more your thing, look to Lady Eve’s ambling garden samba or Motomasa’s future crunk reworking of mysterious drum and bass producers, Abunaii.
